As you probably know, our mission is reducing food waste worldwide. Why? Because it has many significant consequences on our planet and therefore on our lives.

Each year, 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted - that is roughly ⅓ of all food produced. And it is not improving. With that much food being wasted, it is a tragic paradox that around 815 million people are suffering from hunger all over the world. 

Did you know that the amount of food wasted in Europe alone can feed 1 billion people? 

The more we have - the more we waste

We are not wasting to the same extent all over the world. The more food you have access to, the more you throw away. In America, they waste 9 times as much as in Mali; 95 kilos vs. just 11 kilos per person each year. This just shows that the more we have available, the more we actually also consume - and in the end; waste.

It’s the offer and demand conundrum. 

Consequences of food waste

What’s important to note is that in the Western world, most of the food waste is happening on consumer and retails levels. However, in the developing countries, most of the waste is happening during production and transportation. 

Another completely ridiculous thing regarding food waste; we throw away perfectly good food just because it doesn’t have the right look. Perfectly good fruit and vegetables are discarded because they don’t live up to the “beauty standards”. Unnecessary. Luckily, more and more companies making use of “ugly” produce are seeing the light of day. 

If food waste were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, only surpassed by China and The US. It is also causing enormous amounts of water to be wasted. 250 cubic kilometers every year to be exact. That’s 3 times the size of Lake Geneva.
