Accessibility at Too Good To Go

Our commitment to accessibility

At Too Good To Go, we’re committed to making our app accessible to as many people as possible. We believe everyone should be able to take part in the fight against food waste—without barriers.

We design and build our app to be user-friendly, inclusive, and aligned with globally recognised accessibility standards, including the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA, and with applicable legal frameworks such as the European Accessibility Act (EAA).

Standards we follow

Our goal is to comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA, the internationally recognised standards for digital accessibility.

Accessibility is an ongoing process. We continuously review and improve our digital products to remove barriers, enhance usability, and ensure that all users — regardless of ability, device, or location — can fully engage with Too Good To Go.

Accessibility features

Current accessibility features include:

  • Screen reader support: The app currently works with major screen readers on iOS and Android, including VoiceOver and TalkBack. We are aware that parts of the experience can be challenging and are working to improve them.
  • Alternative text: We include text descriptions for most images and icons so that visual content can be understood using assistive tools.
  • Consistent navigation: The app layout and navigation are designed to be predictable and consistent.
  • Keyboard and switch input compatibility: Users can navigate the app with hardware keyboards or switch controls on mobile devices. We are aware that parts of the experience can be challenging and are working to improve them.
  • Colour and contrast adjustments: We use accessible colour palettes and contrast levels to support users with low vision. We are currently working to improve areas where colour contrasts do not yet meet accessibility standards.

Limitations and alternatives

We are improving accessibility in the Too Good To Go app on an ongoing basis, but we recognise that there are still areas where the experience can be enhanced. The following are some of the current limitations we are addressing as part of our accessibility efforts:

Some elements are not yet fully compatible with screen readers or may provide inconsistent navigation and feedback.

Certain components and visual layouts were not initially optimised for screen reader technology, which can cause incomplete or confusing announcements for users relying on assistive tools.

We are reviewing key user flows with screen reader testing, improving element labelling, and updating app structure to ensure more consistent navigation and announcements across the app.

Text size adjustment

Text cannot yet be resized up to 200% without loss of content or functionality.

Some parts of the app were designed with fixed layouts that do not yet adapt well to larger text.

We are exploring design updates to support better text scaling across the app.

Colour contrast

Some text and interface elements do not meet minimum contrast ratios.

Older visual elements were created before our current accessibility design standards were in place.

We are gradually updating our visual design to ensure improved contrast and readability.

Keyboard navigation

Not all elements are fully usable with external keyboards or switch controls.

Certain mobile interface components are optimised for touch interactions and need further adaptation.

We are enhancing navigation to make more parts of the app operable without touch gestures.

Screen orientation

The app currently supports only portrait orientation.

Most users access the app vertically, and some features were built specifically for portrait layouts.

Enabling support for multiple orientations would require significant structural changes to the app’s interface and underlying design framework.

We are assessing options to make the app experience more flexible across different device orientations, while keeping usability and performance in balance.

Error messages and input assistance

Some input fields and error messages could provide clearer guidance.

The current form design and message layout do not always make feedback as clear or noticeable as intended.

We are working to improve how information and errors are displayed, with clearer labels, better placement, and more consistent guidance across the app.
