Too Good To Go and Bakers Delight Celebrate Major Milestone: 1 Million Surprise Bags Saved From Going to Waste

Too Good To Go, the social impact company behind the world’s largest marketplace for surplus food, today announces a milestone success in its partnership with Bakers Delight, having officially saved 1 million Surprise Bags of food from going to waste across Australia.
The milestone demonstrates the powerful commercial and financial benefits of the Too Good To Go marketplace for franchise networks. By providing a seamless, reliable retail channel for surplus inventory, the partnership successfully supports Franchisees on margin protection and profitability, allowing individual bakeries to recoup costs on high-quality baked goods that would otherwise be thrown away. Since launching the partnership, Bakers Delight franchisees have successfully unlocked value from their surplus food, recouping approximately $6.9 million in retail value.
"At Too Good To Go, we help our partners unlock value from surplus food and reduce food waste. Reaching this 1 million milestone with Bakers Delight - one of Australia's most loved and trusted brands - shows just how much of a difference we can make when a dedicated community comes together and demonstrates how small, everyday actions can make a big impact when scaled across a dedicated franchise network. This partnership proves that reducing food waste is a win-win-win solution: it protects franchisee profitability, gives everyday Australians fantastic value, and delivers an immediate positive impact for our environment." said Joost Rietveld, VP of Operations APAC at Too Good To Go.
For grocery retail and bakery networks, the costs associated with food waste can severely impact the bottom line. The Too Good To Go marketplace offers a practical, 'no cure, no pay' business model that turns a potential disposal cost into an operational win, ensuring retailers generate income from inventory that would otherwise be reduced to waste.
Elise Gillespie, CEO of Bakers Delight, said, “Our partnership with Too Good To Go shows how we can take meaningful action on food waste while supporting our franchise network and delivering great outcomes for customers. Surprise Bags provide a simple, effective solution for managing surplus, while giving customers outstanding value. It’s a clear example of how small, everyday choices can add up to a significant positive impact for our communities and the environment.”
Bakers Delight franchisees are utilising the marketplace to recoup production costs and protect their margins, proving that proactive management of surplus food is a highly effective commercial strategy. Directly through the app, store teams can flexibly include surplus in Surprise Bags - whatever that ends up being. This marketplace model drives net-new footfall, with data showing that more than half of the users who collect a Surprise Bag were otherwise not planning to visit that store that day, and nearly half end up purchasing additional items in-store.
In addition to direct financial recovery for small business owners and franchisees, saving 1 million Surprise Bags from going to waste delivers massive environmental benefits.
Accumulated across this milestone success, the 1 million Surprise Bags saved by Bakers Delight have successfully avoided:
- 2,700 tonnes of CO2e emissions from entering the atmosphere.
- 810 million litres of water from being used unnecessarily.
- 2.8 million m2 of land from being used unnecessarily for food production per year.
By turning a nationwide environmental challenge into a localised business opportunity, Bakers Delight and Too Good To Go have established a new model for managing retail surplus. Saving one million Surprise Bags proves that protecting the environment and driving business growth go hand-in-hand, setting a new benchmark for franchise networks across Australia and demonstrating that proactive surplus management is a highly effective strategy for commercial success.
