Celebrity chef and Great British Bake Off 2016 winner, Candice Brown, has joined forces with the world’s largest food saving app, Too Good To Go, to create four brand new recipes to tackle food waste.
The aim is to combat food waste caused by a misunderstanding over what Best Before date labels mean, as Too Good To Go’s latest survey reveals only half (52%) of Brits think Best Before dated food is safe to eat past its date.
With the average Brit wasting over £300* of Best Before dated food a year, Candice and Too Good To Go are encouraging Brits to stop and use their senses to look, smell, and taste food that is past its Best Before date, instead of automatically throwing it away.
The delicious and easy-to-replicate dishes have been developed to highlight food items that are often past their Best Before date, but still perfectly good to eat - including milk, cereals, soft cheese and yoghurt.
Covering sweet and savoury, the recipes have been designed by Candice to celebrate some of the nation’s favourite comfort-foods. Each recipe is available in full via Too Good To Go’s blog and Instagram page:
Macaroni Cheese with Wild Mushrooms, Kale and Garlic
Shreddie-Coated Buttermilk Chicken Tenders with Blue Cheese Dipping Sauce
Cookie Crisp Cereal Milkshake
Yoghurt Cheesecake Eton Mess
Speaking about the campaign, Candice Brown says, "Unfortunately food waste is a huge problem in the UK and one of the main reasons for this is the misunderstanding of best before dates and not trusting or using our senses to check whether food is too good to go in the bin. I don’t hide the fact I’m quite food obsessed and love creating recipes, playing around with food and of course eating! This is why I’m proud to be part of the Too Good to Go campaign to help people understand and use the date labels to make the most of their food and show this is a really important way to avoid food going to waste. I’m a massive fridge and cupboard raider using ingredients that may have been forgotten about or have gone past their best before, but I know this can be daunting so I have come up with 4 delicious and easy peasy recipes encouraging consumers to look, smell and taste so as not to waste!"
The collaboration with Candice also forms part of Too Good To Go’s pioneering industry-led campaign to combat confusion over date labels on food. The award-winning campaign has seen over 40 major food brands to date - including Nestle, Arla, Danone and PepsiCo - transition from Use By to Best Before date labels on their products and feature new on-pack guidance, pictured below, encouraging Brits to 'look, smell and taste' Best Before labelled food to check it’s safe to eat even beyond the date shown. You can read up more on the campaign here.
Jamie Crummie, co-founder of Too Good To Go, adds: “We’ve seen an incredible appetite over the last year from food businesses joining our ‘Look Smell Taste’ initiative to reduce the amount of perfectly good food that is wasted every day simply because of date label confusion. However, what is clear is that there is still a huge amount of consumer education to be done. We’re so excited to be working with Candice to help arm consumers with the confidence and understanding when it comes to judging food that is Best Before labelled and I can’t wait to see how much more impact we can have in reducing household food waste. In the midst of a cost-of-living crisis and climate crisis, reducing our food waste is one simple thing that everyone can do to save literally hundreds of pounds each year and pave the way for a greener future of our planet. I also encourage any brands who haven’t yet taken the steps to join the campaign to get in touch - we’d love to have you join our food waste movement.”
