As a social impact company fighting food waste, we know it’s not enough to simply have a noble mission. We have a responsibility to ensure we’re giving more to the planet than we’re taking, which is why we’re so proud to announce that from 2020 onwards, Too Good To Go is committed to being carbon neutral+.
What does it mean to be carbon neutral+?
In addition to neutralizing our company’s carbon emissions, we extract more carbon from the atmosphere than we put in.
How did we reach this status?
With help from Planetly, we calculated all of our direct and energy-related emissions, along with indirect emissions caused by our service providers and services. Totaling all our 2020 emissions, we found that we had a footprint of 2,475 tons of CO2e. We then offset these emissions by supporting certified climate action projects in India and Peru.
What sustainability projects are we supporting?
The food system is the biggest driver in deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. To support our vision of a sustainable food system for the future, we’re investing in biodiversity preservation and afforestation through the REDD+ Project in Peru. This important project also creates jobs and training on sustainable agricultural methods for local communities.
To counter the highly-emitting web servers that keep our app running, we’re also supporting a renewable energy project in India. This project helps to reduce 659,000 tons of CO2e from the atmosphere annually.
Why is it so important to reduce your carbon footprint?
Carbon footprint is the overall amount of greenhouse gas emissions, mainly CO2, produced by an individual, community, industry, or event. It’s how we measure our effect on the environment, as an increase in carbon footprint is the main contributor to climate change. Growing emissions of CO2 and its equivalents are causing major disruption of various natural systems, with increasing temperatures and rising sea levels threatening ecosystems, wildlife, and overall human health and wellbeing. Fortunately, change is possible, and it starts with each of us! Waste Warriors saved 28 million meals from the trash last year, and over 50,000 food businesses around the world joined our movement to fight food waste.
