Too Good To Go BlogZERO-WASTE CARAMEL AND CHOCOLATE APPLES
Halloween is a time when you can transform yourself into something different, and the same goes for the old chocolate bar and caramel sweets at the back of your cupboard.
DIY your spooky treats, help to reduce food waste and enjoy delicious caramel and chocolate apples.
In the spirit of saving food from going to waste, sub apples for any fruit you have in the house, or whatever fruit you nabbed in a Surprise Bag!
ZERO-WASTE CARAMEL AND CHOCOLATE APPLES
Ingredients:
- 4 apples (or other fruit)
- 1 cup of caramel or chocolate
- Toppings of your choice: eg. nuts, sprinkles, etc.
Method:
- Wash your apples thoroughly, then wipe them dry.
- Remove the apple stem and insert a wooden stick about 3/4 down into the apple.
- If using caramel, melt it in saucepan and simmer for a few minutes. If using chocolate, melt in a saucepan or microwave. (Go little by little to avoid burning it!)
- Hold the apple stick, dip the apple into your caramel or chocolate and tilt the pot to coat the apple.
- Allow your caramel or chocolate to set til sticky (40 - 45 mins for caramel, 30 mins for chocolate) and then decorate.
PAST ITS BEST BEFORE? THAT’S NOT SCARY!
Your candy and chocolate likely have a best if used by date, rather than an expiration date. Best if used by dates are about food quality, not safety, so your goodies are perfectly fine to eat as long as they have been stored correctly.
Look, smell and taste before you waste!
Did you know? White residue on the surface of your chocolate is known as ‘bloom’. When chocolate has bloomed, it is still safe to eat!
