Navigating Tax Season 2026: A Small Business Guide

Posted on February 2, 2026
A man in a dark apron works at a cafe counter, preparing takeout orders with bags, jars, and a tablet, with takeout containers on a shelf above.

Managing a food business requires constant attention to detail. Whether you’re running a neighborhood bakery, a boba shop, or a corner grocery store, managing your taxes shouldn't be the most demanding task on your list this winter.

Use the following guidelines to help you navigate this tax season with ease.

Ensure Accurate Tip Reporting

If your store allows for tipping, don’t leave money on the table. The Section 45B Credit allows food and beverage employers to claim a credit for the social security and Medicare taxes they pay on employee tips. It’s one of the most significant tax breaks available specifically to the industry.

Deduct Equipment & Renovations

Did you upgrade to a high-capacity oven or install a new refrigeration unit in 2025? Under current tax laws, you can often "expense" the full cost of that equipment immediately rather than depreciating it over years.

📅 2026 Deadlines to Watch

In the food industry, timing is everything. Please be aware of these key dates:

  • March 16, 2026: Returns due for S-Corps and Partnerships
  • April 15, 2026: Returns due for Sole Proprietors and C-Corps.

We know how much hard work goes into keeping your stores running and shelves stocked. We hope this guide brings you a bit of peace of mind so you can head into the new season feeling ready, confident and prepared!
